The School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) offers ABET accredited undergraduate degree programs in computer science, information technology and civil, electrical computer and mechanical engineering. Our programs prepare students for today’s competitive job market by providing a curriculum that includes the latest technology and business trends, as well as a comprehensive education in each field’s theory and fundamental practice. SCE is proud to be Kansas City’s only university with ABET accredited engineering, computer science and information technology degree programs. In addition, SCE offers master’s degree programs in computer science and civil, computer electrical and mechanical engineering and participates in UMKC’s interdisciplinary PhD program.
Currently SCE serves more than 700 students. Faculty, staff, classrooms, laboratories and student workspaces are housed in Robert H. Flarsheim Hall, which was constructed in 1999 to house the school and is located on the main UMKC campus just blocks from Kansas City's world renowned Country Club Plaza.
SCE faculty members are accessible and student-oriented. Engaged in teaching, research and serving the community, faculty expertise is reflected in the wide range of degrees SCE is able to offer its students. Students study with faculty who are recognized nationally and internationally for their work, contributing to the field through research, presentations and publications. Collaboration with corporate leaders and community supporters provide SCE students internship opportunities and co-operative programs, in addition to scholarships, corporate funding and information on current technology trends. SCE curriculum is relevant and teaches the knowledge companies need!
SCE is expanding into the biotechnology fields of computational biology, bioinformatics, biometrics and brain-computer interface, bioengineering and biomaterials/nanomaterials via cooperative programs with the School of Biological Sciences, School of Dentistry and the Department of Physics. These areas are experiencing rapid growth and offer students career opportunities in exciting new areas with a high demand for professionally trained computer scientists and engineers.
